Gender Binary: The Simple Yet Complex System

Gender

It's a complex and complicated topic of discussion. We are born into this world and given a gender based on what genitalia we were given. Society tells us that male = man and female = woman. This ideology is known as Cisgender. Many people are fine with being cisgender whilst others refuse to accept. Gender is a binary system constructed by society, telling people they must conform to either man or woman, but what about the people who fall in between?

People assume that sex and gender are the same thing but they are not! Sex is something you are born with, something that is in your genetic makeup. Gender is, like earlier stated, a social construct created by society. Some individuals choose to express themselves in non-conventional ways. This is called gender expression.

Gender expression can be done in many ways; the most popular form of gender expression being through fashion. There are celebrities who have started to get scrutiny for the way they choose to express themselves. One such example of recent scrutiny is Jaden Smith. Smith has been photographed over the past year wearing dresses, skirts and other "women's clothing" (as there deemed by society).

Jaden has been flooded with everyone's opinions ranging all over the acceptance scale, but there is one comment in particular that has stuck out. Saying that "it's a faze" and he must be "traveling the route of wearing wigs, lipstick and make up, have a boyfriend/husband, get a sex change...".
This is a perfect example of how society shames men for being an individual. The idea that you can't be a man unless you wear blue jeans and a button up. That you can't adorn any feminine characteristics or qualities and still be considered a man.

It's ironic to me how things considered feminine in today's society were once worn by the most hyper masculine men that existed. The ancient Greek men in their tunics, the Egyptians in their kohl liner, and the Englishmen riding their horses whilst wearing high heels are all prime examples of how gender is a social construct.

As a man choosing to exhibit feminine characteristics, Jaden has been labeled by many as transgender, but he is, from what I can tell a man who is comfortable in his own skin. Someone who is just enjoys being a straight man who likes wearing the occasional dress. Some people believe that  choosing to express your gender is either tied to your gender identity or you sexuality, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Gender identity and gender expression are two totally different concepts. What you identify as and the way you choose to express how you feel, it's as simple as that.
Just as whom you choose to love and how you view yourself are two completely different concepts.

A popular descriptor from the LGBTQ community used to describe Smith is Gender Queer. Gender queer is when someone doesn't subscribe to the conventional gender construct. Gender queer individuals either identify as both, neither, or a combination of male and female genders. Jaden, to the public's knowledge has never said he is such. Instead I believe he is simply put, a man who doesn't allow his gender to be defined by the clothing he chooses to wear.

So what I want everyone reading to take away is this: Gender is fluid, not set in stone. You express yourself in whatever way you see fit and don't care what other people think!

Separation of Church and State

On June 30, 2015 the Oklahoma Supreme Court made the decision that the "Ten Commandments" monument needed to be removed from the state capitol. For most people this is no big deal, but for many Oklahomans it is a huge deal.

Many Oklahomans are very upset, and are making comments like "What happened to One Nation Under God?" and " I am just very disappointed in the government right now.". I am one of  the, what seems like very few, Oklahomans who believes the taking down of the monument is a good decision. Not only do I believe in the separation of church and state, I believe the deconstruction of the monument will send a more positive message to Oklahomans who, either don't practice a religion or practice one that doesn't follow the "Ten Commandments".

These naysayers of the demise of the monument make me question the sanity of this state. Why do you feel the need to have a monument of your beliefs plastered on state property? Isn't the American ideal that we are a country of freedom? Making people believe what you believe is exactly the opposite of what this country is suppose to be about, and the reason for separation of church and state.

So I will leave with the question: Where do you stand on this topic?

Acne Prone Skin: The Do's and Don't's

I don't know about you but nothing is worse than waking up in the morning with a either a few or a whole face full of acne. When I first started puberty I knew going into it that I would most likely have bad acne. I mean my mom still to this day has acne. Something most people do not realize is that acne is indeed hereditary. So for people like me where a parent had bad acne and still has mild acne there is just nothing you can do during puberty but fight. I have found living with acne prone skin is a constant battle, whether you eat a lot of junk food or just forget to wash your face before bed, you are always fighting those nasty blemishes! I am going to give a few tricks and tips on making the war a little less intense.

1.) Try To Eat Healthy.

Whether it's cutting out that soda, or just eating more fruits and veggies, a sure fire way to help cut down on those pimples is to change your diet. For me I have found that eating more greens and cutting as many sugary sweet drinks as possible out my diet has increased my facial beauty tenfold. If fruits and veggies aren't your thing you can do many things such as taking some vitamins and supplements. I can personally attest that Hair Skin and Nail vitamins work wonders on my skin!

2.) Oily Skin? Try Some Oil!

As crazy as it sounds, putting an oil such as coconut or almond oil on your face is a great way to cut down the grease on your mug! I know that this may baffle some people but using an oil on your face will actually trick your body into producing less oil. Your body sees that oil on your face as any other oil, except the great thing about coconut oil is the fact that it a.) absorbs into your skin leaving you with a nice healthy glow, and b.) is a natural antibacterial which will help fight the cause of the blemishes. So bye-bye face grease, hello sexy skin!

3.) Cut Out The Chemicals

I know that I myself am guilty of the crazy chemical treatments to get rid of those stubborn face demons, but you don't have to be! If you think about it, would you use such harsh chemicals in other aspects of you life? My simple answer is "NO!" . For me once I sat down and realized how bad it is to be pumping your body full of nasty chemicals and toxins I immediately googled some all natural remedies. I find that when it's time to was my face a good old ground oatmeal paste works wonders. Many lotions and shampoos are made with oatmeal so why not make a face wash as well?! Using a little ground up oatmeal with a bit of water usually does the trick for me. It's easy, it's gentle and it's all natural! So NO MORE CHEMICALS!

4.) Masks Are Your Friend!

As you may already know face masks come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and formulas. Sometimes finding the right one for you can be a challenge, a feat even! So here is a list of all my favorite masks for my oily skin type!
1. Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque
2. Freeman Facial Polishing Mask
3. Freeman Facial Clay- Avocado & Oatmeal Mask

These masks are my go to acne busters for when my face gets overwhelmed with nasty blemishes.

5.) Stop With The Stress

This for me is the main source of my acne. Whenever I get too stressed out I will breakout within a few days. I know it's a nearly impossible task but I have tried to cut as much stress from my life as I possible can and my skin and body thank me for it!

So now that you have some tips and tricks of the trade, I hope you feel more confident in your ability to fight that acne battle! Dealing with acne seems like a never ending process but eventually it will get better!

Hair Review: Ion Color "Dusty Rose"

So as some of you know I am a frequent visitor of Sally Beauty Supply. So much so that most of the employees know me by name! Anyway, I recently went in to Sally's with my friend to get some new hair dye. We are constantly trying new hair colors and techniques on her, because she views her hair as exactly that, hair. The most recent hair experiment was a new permanent fashion color line, brought out by Ion, named "Dusty Rose". My friend has been obsessing over rose shades and hues recently, and the moment we were introduced to the color line, we new we needed to try this rosey shade. Unfortunately there was no swatch to see what the color was suppose to look like, but my like I said my friend is pretty fearless with her hair. So we decided to try "Dusty Rose"!

Like all the other colors in Ion's line you must mix the color with either a 10, 20, or 30 vol. developer. After much deliberation with our favorite Sally's employee we decided to get both 10 and 20 vol. developer and to do a strand test to see which worked best. So we paid for our product and high-tailed it home to give this new color a try.

My friend started out with a nice level 8 or 9 blonde which is plenty light enough for a color to take.
We then proceeded to do the strand tests, one side with 10 vol., the other with 20.
This photo does it no justice, but the 10 worked the best as I previously thought. So we then continued on with thoughts of what we wanted to do with this color! Should we do a section? Should we do the whole head? Then we thought a little more and came up with just doing a nice ombre/balayage. If you don't know what that is I have one question for you. "HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING UNDER A ROCK?" Anyways if you don't know balayage is a technique typically done with a balayage paddle were you saturate the color or lightener on the ends and feather the color up towards the head. This technique is personally my favorite, and I used it to color my friend to her previous blonde state.

We then proceeded to heavily balayage the color all over her head.
The directions said to leave the color on for 35 to 40 minutes, but we decided to check it ever 15 minutes until we thought it looked correct. We ended up leaving it to process for the full 45 minutes so the color was super saturated.
This was the color we were left with. Of course this picture yet again doesn't do it justice, but I will be more than happy to share a picture/video of what it looks like in sunlight when I get a chance.
Here is a video of it in slow motion!
As always I hope you enjoy reading these, and I hope you share my blog with your friends and family!

College Living: Is It Right For Me?

So as of December 2014 I started seriously thinking about what I wanted to do with my life. Did I want to work for an online media company, did I want to be a cosmetologist or did I feel it in me to pursue my passion for dog grooming? Then it occurred to me that I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do. I guess I should give you a little back story.

When I was a senior in high school I though I had my life planned out. I was going to skip college find a job near my home town and work until I had enough money to move to California, where I would then follow my dreams of becoming a renowned dog groomer. I would have my cute little shop in a well known part of town, where a vast array of people would bring there pets to be primed, primped and polished, to the best animal they could be. Unfortunately that dream was crushed when my mother told me that I would be going to college. So at this point in the school year, (April) I said "Oh my god! What am I going to do?! I've only got a few months to find a school, apply and hopefully get accepted!" So I frantically thought of ideas of what I should do, and finally came to the decision of Northern Oklahoma College. I of course applied and got in, then months later packed up and moved away to Stillwater.

Just a few weeks in I could tell that college was not for me. I have extreme test anxiety and every piece of knowledge I have seems to fall out of my brain like a cut bag of flour. So of course my test anxiety meant that I would need intermediate schooling before I could start 'real college'. An entire semester behind and still not doing well, I hated my life. I get the fact that college is an important undertaking for many people, but I just had the gut feeling that I didn't belong. I decided to give it some time and maybe I would like it, so I finished my first year and started my second and the feeling never went away. So here I am a college student faced with a decision, stop college and begin paying for almost two years of nothing, or continue and fall further into a state of depression.

Over a month later I have finally decided that I am going to start living for myself! I made the big decision to drop out of college and pursue Cosmetology school, and maybe even start some blogging along my way. Who knows? I might even throw in some YouTube videos here and there. So hears to 2015, and the year I start truly enjoying myself!

Talk to you soon,
Tyler
